HOME APPLICATION INFO ABOUT MONTESSORI SPECIAL PROGRAMS

La Mariposa Montessori

La Mariposa Elementary is a classic Montessori school with certified instructors and traditional Montessori materials presented in the classrooms. Work groups are small, with children making independent, responsible decisions about their workflow and individual progress. There is also a successful mentor program where the older nine- to twelve-year-olds help the younger six- to eight-year-olds with homework and personal issues. The children are involved in many community programs, including visits to local nursing homes and animal shelters, and participating in energy conservation and recycling programs.

Education is not something that the teacher does, but that is a natural process, which develops spontaneously in the human being. It is not acquired by listening to words, but in virtue of his experiences in which the child acts on his environment. The teacher’s task is not to talk, but to prepare and arrange a series of motives for cultural activity in a special environment made for the child. So our goal becomes to simply provide the quality materials and the supportive environment, and let the child’s natural instincts develop the respectful intelligence that is innate to our human endeavor.

The children are also exposed to many different individuals in the community through the various special projects planned by the instructors. These projects include care for the extensive barnyard of animals, jewelry making with local jewelers, bookmaking, music and dance from local artists, dog training programs, projects creating shelters and adobe structures, and day trips to various animal care centers in the area are examples of the enrichment programs to which the children are introduced.
